It's a fact. Johnson had peace feelers out throughout 1964 and 1965 even.

Johnson never came to terms with being the first American president to have lost a war. He repeatedly said so to his close collaborators as revelead by transcripts later released.

Even pragmatist Nixon took a term and half before withdrawal.
