2 Passengers Stab Calif. Bus Driver
Oct. 2002
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Two passengers stabbed a bus driver on a California freeway Monday night, causing a crash that killed two people and injured several others, authorities say.

The attack occurred as the driver was traveling 70 mph down Interstate 5 with a bus full of passengers, according to Lt. Jeff Johnson of the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.

"This was not an accident," Johnson said.

Emergency crews were being flown to the crash scene.

The attack caused the bus to overturn and careen out of control at about 8:35 p.m. along the interstate in Fresno.

One of the alleged attackers had been arrested, Johnson said.

There was no word on what the motive might have been for the attack.

As emergency crews arrived, they quickly found upward of 50 people injured, including 10 seriously.

Interstate 5 was closed to northbound traffic by 10 p.m. at the spot of the accident along the heavily traveled route.

There was no immediate word if other vehicles were involved as the bus crashed.

The Fresno Sheriff's Department was leading the investigation.
