Excellent discussion over the weekend. I also was going to mention that I fully agree with your post, Bob. Our business will start re-engineering our IT solutions this year and when it's all said and done we will be installing a client/server style customized application sometime in 2003. Since we are going custom, it's going to be a bit more expensive but the base server box will probably go for about $15K (hardware only). Add in anywhere from 30 to 40 workstations/laptops, network+web infrastructure, etc... Currently, we figure the combined software and licensing will run at least 5 to 1 what the hardware costs (and probably more when all aspects of our software needs are completed, os, database, website, email, archiving, security, etc.).
