Slavery was a lamentable failure, yes. The trade involved having many die in execrable conditions in transit; separated families, sometimes without knowledge of what had become of the person sold into bondage; disrupted normal family life-- slaves could not legally marry for a long time, and spouses and children could be sold off without any consideration; led to abuse, as when massa would use slaves as harlots, sometimes mere girls in puberty; kept men and women in a state of moral dependency and ignorance, instead of letting them develop their minds and spirits; led to a great bloodletting during the Civil War; and so on and so forth. Yes, the descendants are by and large better off here, but that cannot justify the immorality of the practice itself.......
