"The dramatic decline in the Chicago PMI for September by more than six and a half points to 48.1 is disturbing as it is the first time since January that the index dropped below 50. If taken literally, this suggests that the manufacturing sector is contracting, confirming suspicions that had been raised recently that the sector is running into trouble.

The new orders index was down by 6 1/2 points to 49.2 (again, the first reading below 50 since January), while the production component was down by about 4 1/2 to 52.8. Although the Chicago PMI and the ISM index do not correlate closely on a same-month basis, we will be surprised if we see much of a rebound in the ISM index for September tomorrow from its 50.5 level in August."
