I would say, despite misgivings over some trends in the post- War period, that things are mostly going in the right direction. We have made significant progress in race relations; essentially completed the emancipation of women; made secondary education universally available, and college education available to those who could profit from it; practically eradicated smallpox, polio, and several other diseases; extended people's lifespans and made them healthier in the process; afforded even the common laborer some leisure, and the ability to fill it as he pleases; and otherwise improved the standard of living for most in the country.
