How long after the regime changes in Germany and Japan have we had troops there?

I figure we will be... We're already there but we have little direct influence over Iraqi society, except in denying the economy the ability to fully profit from their oil exports.

That would change when Saddam is gone.. and the US, Russians, French, Chinese, Dutch, Italians, and anyone else who eventually decide to support the US policy of regime change will all have people there for years, and hopefully decades..

And if we're lucky and do it right, the majority of them will be businessmen and engineers, rather than soldiers.

We have them there because we needed a "Lily Pad" in the area, Carl. We will probably establish one in Iraq. I could make the argument that we pull them all home and forget about the rest of the world. As a matter of fact I used to believe that.

But I changed my mind, years ago. Our very size and dominance forces us to have troops over there if we want to protect our interests. I used to defend your position. It is ideologically pure, but Utopian.
