Infonet Ensures TV Globo's Live Coverage Of World Championship Soccer Matches

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 8, 2002--Infonet Services Corporation (NYSE:IN; FSE:IN), a leading provider of global communications services for multinationals, today announced that it successfully addressed the global infrastructure requirements of TV Globo, the largest broadcast company in South America, enabling that company to provide comprehensive coverage of this year's world championship soccer matches. Running on Infonet's The World Network®, TV Globo was able to deploy journalists, news anchors, sports announcers and commentators to cover events from sites in Ulsan and Seoul, Korea for the quarter-finals and, subsequently, throughout Japan for the semi-finals and final match. In Japan, TV Globo was able to broadcast from a number of distinct locations, connecting to both its servers and the Internet, incorporating into its coverage real time information about the event, sponsors and the culture of Korea and Japan.

As TV Globo's technology partner over the past twelve years, Infonet has deployed global communications between TV Globo's operational center in Rio de Janeiro and its international broadcast centers, providing television coverage of major international events including, most recently, the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada in 1999 and the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia in 2000. The two companies also worked together on the Brazilian National Election in 2000 then came together for the 2002 Soccer World Cup.

This latest assignment required tight coordination between Infonet and TV Globo staff in Brazil, Korea and Japan, as well as with Infonet's Asia-Pacific and headquarters operations. Infonet's teams were required to manage all support and services essential for this global sporting event. While critical services for live coverage of the games were anticipated and installed in Korea, no one could predict whether or not the Brazilian soccer team would qualify for the semi-final championships to be held in Japan. If the team succeeded, it could then be based in any one of 25 different locations throughout Japan -- and coverage of the matches would be required for a company with a South American customer base.

"Quality of service was one of our main concerns. With a history of successful special events coverage and Infonet's seamless network, we knew we would have a reliable and integrated solution and 24/7 support of our mission-critical applications," acknowledged Carlos Otavio, TV Globo's Director for IT and Strategy.

"Whether or not the team would participate in the semi-finals in Japan was an unknown until the play actually commenced," stated Rose Macedo, Country Manager of Infonet Brazil. "As a result, support and coordination were more challenging than usual and a seamless network and comprehensive remote access were responsible for the success of the 2002 Soccer World Cup," Macedo confirmed.
