I believe the purpose of the snipe is to win the auction from the last bidder. The sniper obviously wants the item. Is it the snipers fault that the last bidder would only risk so much money to win the auction?

Proxy is part of the rules of the game. Those that don't use it will lose. It's that simple.

I look at it from the buyers point of view and you look at it from a sellers point of view. It works for me. It works against you. Your best efforts would be to find a way to encourage the bidders to use proxy on your items. I would put a statement on each item reminding the bidders not to allow a sniper to get the item for a few pennies more than their last public bid. Get them to use the proxy.

From my point of view, changing the format to allow continued bidding would only help the sellers. It has no value to the bidders. The bidders just need to learn how to play the game.
