First let me make it clear that I am a Christian. OK? I'm not a Bible thumper and I don't go to church regularly, so by some standards I'm not a very good Christian.

I have dealt at length with Creationism having had an employee who couldn't resist bringing it in to discussions about work issues I considered to be off limits for religious topics.

To me, Creationism has nothing whatever to do with the essence of love, forgiveness and redemption at the core of Christianity. The Creation story, after all, is rooted in the Old Testament Jewish history and culture. Granting that the entire Bible is the inspired word of God, it is not necessary in my view to interpret the Creation story literally.

People can choose to believe or not believe Creationism without violating their Christian faith. For myself, I choose to believe that God is more than some wizard who somehow created the Universe with alchemy and a wand. It may never be impossible for humans to fully understand how He created it, but the clearest and most sensible arguments are those revealed by science. Scientific arguments in no way interfere with any spiritual tenets. I don't see any value in arguing about it.

I don't believe Creationism should be taught in public schools, or private ones for that matter. I believe the subject should be taught in church, by believers. If churchgoers like myself choose to believe in the Scientific explanations of how God created the Universe we can sit down beside Creationism believers and talk about something else.
