Yes, they did, to their credit.

Because that part of them that had created for themselves a duty and an obligation, plus the training they voluntarily underwent to help them fulfill that self-created duty, satisfied them that it was in their best interests to fulfill their obligations even if it meant danger or even death (though I don't know of any who went in after they were aware that the towers were going to collapse),

People can create for themselves their own senses of duty, which become very important to them and to their long-term self-image and mental health.

I admire those who created and fulfilled that sense of duty that day. But that doesn't mean that it wasn't based ultimately on their recognition of their long-term self-interest.
