Once the war drums starting beating and the rhetoric gets turned up loud enough, it is hard to think straight. Iraq and Vietnam are as different as night and day in most respects, but there is a common denominator. Our military works and works well under so many circumstances that we are inclined to see it as the solution to every problem. Our diplomatic efforts are much more uneven, and sometimes downright disappointing and counter-productive. This was my beef with the "diplomatic" efforts made by Cheney earlier this year -- they were very ill-conceived and had the exact opposite effect intended. Now we are faced with few if any options but war -- and a war we will fight under the worst of circumstances as the legitimacy of our actions is far from clear. No military likes to go into battle with a cloud over the legitimacy of the mission. At the very least we should have learned this from Vietnam.
