Instead, he said, surveys have found that "Middle Easterners to a person are firm democrats,"

Now, there's a blanket statement to just drop into the conversation! Evidence, please? There's certainly none to be found in any of their government structures (unless you count the Turks and the Israelis), and precious little evidence of democracy in Arab family and clan structures.
