We have to go back to the very beginning, when I described the way in which we actually start out as moral creatures. The values we internalize from society create a set of expectations, for example, about what is entailed in being a good father, that establish our baseline duties, that is, the minimum of what we are expected to do not to run afoul of the moral code. We do not choose them, they create us. We get to edit as we go along, but only on the basis of the preexisting moral universe into which we were born.......
