DJ S African Miners Say No Loss To Production Despite Strike

01 Oct 11:20

JOHANNESBURG (Dow Jones)--Workers at South Africa's big three gold miners
failed to heed a general strike call by the Congress of South African Trade
Unions, the country's largest trade union group, with all companies reporting
no loss to production Tuesday.

AngloGold Ltd. (AU), the country's largest gold producer, and Gold Fields
Ltd. (GFI), the second biggest producer, both reported a 100% turnout by
workers at their mines.

Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd. (HGMCY), South Africa's third biggest producer,
however, noted a modest drop in turnout at its Brand 1 and Harmony 2 shaft in
Free State Province, although a company spokeswoman said disruptions were
minimal.

Mike Mtakati, a spokesman at Anglo American Platinum Corp. Ltd. (O.AAP), the
world's leading platinum producer, said it was still too early to say whether
its production was affected, although he added that "an overwhelming majority
of workers turned up for work" Tuesday.

The two-day strike, earmarked for Tuesday and Wednesday, is in protest over
the government's plans to privatize its state-owned enterprises, including
telecommunications giant Telkom, electricity provider Eskom, defense logistics
company Denel and transport utility Transnet.

While the government says its privatization plans are merely aimed at
increasing services and infrastructure, COSATU says they will lead to
widespread job losses.
