It did squirt out, but not until he was out of bounds, and I agree with you, when he hit the ground, he had it in his arms.

If we're talking about the Heap catch, there was one angle which appeared to show the ball bouncing off the ground as he fell on his back. It was from the QB's perspective and they showed it only once.
