Hi Rascal; Re: "He's also an incurable optimist,** assuming that no matter what the situation he will come up with a scenario that will work." ... ** Economy"

It is not in the nature of politicians (who are in power) to give depressing news about the economy to the public. At least one reason for this is that news about the economy has an effect on the economy. The last President who said something depressing about the economy was Carter. For those who didn't instinctively know that the correct Presidential activity on the economy is to shine the voters, the Carter demonstration was probably sufficient.

The reason for this fact is that whatever happens to the economy gets blamed on the leader, unless he can find some external influence to blame it on (like Saddam blamed the bad economy in Iraq on the US). Politicians who are not in charge are allowed to tell the truth. Sometimes politicians can tell the truth when they're running for office, but once they're in there, they no longer have that freedom.

The war in Vietnam was similar, with only politicians who were not in charge being allowed to publicly vent the pessimistic appraisals that so many of them felt early on.
