I think you're a bit too cynical. Some people come here looking for a socially acceptable place to spit. Others don't. The interface between the two is where the tensions occur. IMO, there should be "spitting allowed" and "spitting prohibited" threads so people can choose, much as they choose smoking and nonsmoking areas. Nonspitters can of course go onto spitting threads if they are willing to be virtually spat on. Spitters can go onto nonspitting threads as long as they hold their spitting in abeyance. But to think that everybody comes here looking for a spitting gallery is, I think, inaccurate.
