However, society is wrought with devastating social ills that can be attributed directly to a shift in family dynamics...starting with the difficulties of making the system work as a single parent.

Indeed. Family dynamics haven't adapted at all well to the emancipation of women. Society is still trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. We need to either modernize the family construct or people need to forgo producing offspring until and unless they can care for them. I suppose your alternative would be to return to the bad old days of neurotic housewives, but that would not be a good thing, even if it were possible to recapture that "golden" period.
