It can only come back as a niche. It takes something like the stock market boom cycle to allow such people to exist, otherwise no one but the super rich could afford their products. You need lots of affluent people. There's a wonderful outfit has been growing right down the street from me and they make lovely stuff right here in the big city. But you need a serious cache of disposable income to buy their product rather than head for the nearest furniture discounter.

There was a book I read in the sixties called The Negative Income Tax, I think, that proposed supporting artisans that way because there is a limited market for the products but the way of life seems worth saving.
