This scenario has been coined here long time ago (was is the Club of Rome?) as "Fortress Europe". It's the North/South conflict story. With it goes protectionism in all fields. Who thought that cultural discrimination would even lead trade barriers? That's a point for the South against the 'so-strong' North. We are starting to box ourselves and maybe they build the speed-limit-free Autobahns in the Middle East in the future. Nobody in Europe would have thought that the USA might lead this move a few years ago...
