actually, less Tony than Sandy, and less either of them than the head guy himself, who was more concerned with short-term poll numbers and not pissing people off than he was with spending political capital on foreign policy.

Lake was/is a good guy--smart, decent, well-intentioned--but not the strongest personality around. Professorial is the word that's often used to describe him, and it's accurate. Even less than Tom Hagen, he's not a wartime consigliere, and unfortunately the national security adviser to the world's hegemon has simply got to be one of those.

Berger, in my opinion, was/is a more political creature than Lake, and thus even less apt to push his political hack boss into doing things that might carry costs. To be fair, some of the (good) people who worked for him hold him in higher respect than I do, and that says something, although I'm not convinced.

Bottom line, though, IMO, is that practically everybody who was at subcabinet level and above in the Clinton administration was forced to make unpleasant compromises with their consciences. 'Course, same applies with the folks in the current administration, although for different reasons (and I'm not sure all of these guys have consciences<g>). Probably that's just the way the world works, and my discomfort with it is a reflection of the fact that I never was high up enough to have to face the truly corrupting choices.

Well, I'm finally back on line, Bill, but, most likely, for only a short time. I'm on the road again tomorrow, Tuesday, but, then Wednesday will be back in the desk chair, fingers firmly on the computer keyboard, mouse clicking wildly.

I will try to catch up by simply reading my way to the present position of the thread, wherever that is when I get there. Last numbers I saw, I'm behind "only" 1300 posts.

Austin, if anyone is interested, was fine. Spent most of the time in a wonderful house on a cliff overlooking Lake Travis and, more particularly, Hippie Hollow, for anyone who knows their way around those environs.

Don't expect me to reply to posts to me for several days. I'm trying to read my way into posts to me rather than use the inbox.
