i can't even begin to express how stupid that was, but it is par for the course for major league managers (with the notable exception of Joe Torre). you have to get 4 outs. the presumption in not brining Percival in is that he can only get 3. OK, fine, I'll agree that he can only get three. but why the fark does it have to be the LAST 3. why not have Percival pitch to Giambi and then get two outs in the 9th, and then bring in Shoenweiss or whoever to pitch to Ventura to finish the game off. managers are so farking stupid. the ONLY guy who understands that you use your BEST guy in the most important situation, no matter where you are in the game, is Joe Torre. and look who has all the rings.

the Yankees may or may not have the best talent this year (i think the Cards are better, and maybe the A's) but as long as Torre gets to manage against morons like Scioccia, Howe, Brenley and LaRussa the Yankees will win more than they lose.

Cheers

OT/baseball -- MM, as to bringing in Percival -- he rarely comes in for more than the 9th (and used to pitch poorly in non-save situations, by the way, like a tie or down by one situation, though not so this year). Also, the Angels got where they were this year because their middle relievers/set-up guys had done great.

That said, I'd've brought Percival in for Giambi and certainly for Williams. The Angels motto of "one game at a time" has to be modified for the playoffs, imo. The Angel bullpen woulda been in better shape than the Yankees after that, should the game have gone longer. But Scosia has managed very well this year, and the relievers have pitched well, too. Yanks pulled it out with those pesky 400 foot bombs, not the intangibles.
