>> you don't open it, just weigh it, then call your superiors <<

You can't find out how much material is in a volume of inhomogeneous composition ( a filled closed container) by one weight measure. If you weighed it, How could you know how much weight is the container vs the material inside without opening it unless you used a second measurement?

I'm still not sure what point you were originally trying to make. You asked me how did "they" figure out the contents. I gave not one but two reasonable suggestions for how someone could find out.

You ignored one entirely: read a field identification guide. field identification guides are very popular in military/intelligence circles, so I would not dismiss it.

And it sounds like you are attempting straw-man arguments on the second. First by trying to move "they" around after the fact from being everyone involved in process to only the initial soldier discoverers. and second by trying to force my phrases "a geiger counter or some other measure of radioactivity" and "a counter capable of discerning the amount of each type of radiation particle" to only mean a geiger counter. This was not my intent, geiger was an example for arguments sake to open the possibility of a new type of measure other than weight. I clearly left the door open for other types of counters capable of measuring the amounts of various particles.

In any case, I answered your questions and maybe we should call it a day.
