Back in the late '60s my best friend's father was a longshoreman. If there wasn't enough work, he got paid for sleeping in. They were guaranteed 40hrs pay.

One of the hardest jobs was unloading the banana boats coming in from central america. The longshoremen called the Laborer's Local for people to do those hard jobs (me), while a few of them would find some shade to stand in all day and point while making 4 times the money. The only thing I wanted to do more than shoot the pricks was to be one of them. -g-

Certainly, in the construction trades, the unions committed suicide by driving prices too high.
