Egypt Regrets Joining US Coalition in 1991

02 October 2002

Most of the Arab press today expressed predictable outrage at President
Bush´s signing of the appropriation bill which recognizes Israeli sovereignty
over Jerusalem.

Of greater interest, however, is a small piece by Abdel Hamid al-Sheikh in the
Egyptian al Ra´yi which states that had Egypt known then what it knows today,
it would never have participated in the anti-Iraq coalition assembled by Bush-41
in 1991:

"Had it known that the US intended to remain in the Gulf, and that it would use
the war for the liberation of Kuwait in 1991 as a pretext to exercise control over
the region, Egypt would never have taken part in the international coalition
formed against Iraq. It is obvious at present that the US prepares for war this
time in order to serve the interests of Israel as well as to take hold of Iraq´s
enormous oil wealth. Egypt is here urged to adopt a clear stance, indeed to
strive to create an Arab coalition in support of Iraq."
