The infant has a capacity for making value judgments similar to his capacity for language, and there might be a few things "hardwired" underlying both phenomena. But most of language and values is learned at your mother's knee, on your father's lap, among your peers, in school, through literature, and so forth.

Well said. The infant's "self interest" is mainly self centered (once (s)he starts to think at all, that is). At first, (S)he is the center of the universe. But (s)he will integrate all influences and will then determine via attachments of reason and feeling just what is the most appropriate course to value her/his life...
