The root is the Latin verb absolvo/absolvere/absolutum, meaning to absolve (what else;), to release, to free. Of course, now the connection is getting rather moot - an absolutist ruler is absolved / released ... of what? Here the following construct is enlightening: lege absolutus - absolved / freed from law.

In other words absolutism means freedom from existing laws.

Let's leave it at that for now.
