I assume that God, in His providence, acts to get the best result consistent with permitting the main line of action to proceed on its own, so that there are aspects of spiritual truth in the world's religions, especially as they develop. I think the closest thing to a credible ancient account of divine intervention in history is found in the Bible. Even then, I think that God had limited objectives, and a long term plan, so that human interaction with the divine is filtered through the mental and social limitations of the time.
