A horde of negative news and rumors of an errant sell program...

16:26 ET Wet Seal guides lower for Q3 (WTSLA) 9.20 +0.22: Company warns for Q3 (Oct); sees earnings in the range of $0.00 to $0.05 per share vs the Multex consensus estimate of $0.18 per share.

16:25 ET Bank of NY lowers forecast (BK) 26.76 -2.32:

16:19 ET Guess ? guides lower for Q3 (GES) 3.55 -0.15: Company guides lower for Q3; sees earnings in the range of $0.01-$0.03 per share vs the Multex consensus estimate of $0.07 per share; says comparable store sales for the September period decreased 4.3%.

16:17 ET Advanced Micro cuts Q3 forecast (AMD) 5.37 halted: -- Update -- Co now expects Q3 sales of $500 mln, vs consensus of $615.1 mln, and says that they now anticipate "a substantial operating loss" for the qtr; co cites continuing weakness in the PC mkt.

16:13 ET Advanced Micro -- trading halted, news pending (AMD) 5.37 +0.10:

16:08 ET Transkaryotic says Replagal approval will be delayed, cuts 2002 forecast (TKTX) 33.26 -0.12: Announces that the postponement of the Sept 27 meeting of FDA Advisory Committee will likely delay the timing of a decision on the approval of TKTX's Replagal therapy for the treatment of Fabry Disease into the first half of 2003; also, co now believes that its 2002 sales will likely be below its previous guidance of $35-$42 mln and is expected to be in the $30-$35 mln range.

15:54 ET Trading floors abuzz with talk that sell program was errant : Market managing a minor bounce off lows of the session. Hearing talk that the sell program that took equities down late was supposed to be entered in dollar terms, but was apparently entered as shares. Obviously, we have no confirmation of this, but talk of it is going around. And, given bearish slant by most traders of late, it does not seem like a rumor put out in hopes of rescuing the market.

15:47 ET Breakdown into close being blamed on an institutional sell program :

15:29 ET Nasdaq tests support at 1190 : -- Technical -- Index testing previously identified support at 1190 (see
10:23 ET comment) -- on a break lower, look for an additional floor at 1181 followed by subsequent support at 1172. To the upside, watch for initial resistance now at 1197/1200 followed by additional overhead at 1206 and 1213.

15:29 ET Goodrich corp credit cut to BBB from BBB+ by S&P (GR) 18.98 -1.20:

15:22 ET Cal Dive cuts Q3 guidance; blames weather (CDIS) 21.86 +1.06: -- Update -- Announces that four tropical weather systems significantly reduced expected utilization of the company's fleet of marine construction vessels in the last six weeks of the qtr. As a result, CDIS now sees Q3 EPS of $0.08-$0.11 (Multex consensus $0.23). CDIS puts Q4 at $0.22-$0.29 (consensus $0.25) depending upon the impact of Hurricane Lili on October results.

15:20 ET Kohl's falls on comps rumor (KSS) 60.09 -2.91: -- Update -- Stock is hitting new lows for the session on rumors that same store sales may disappoint; while the mkt expects about 5-7% comps growth, we are hearing that comps may come in flat to down instead; although we cannot confirm this rumor, it is definitely contributing to the selloff and some may see it as plausible given the west coast dock strike and a generally weak retail environment.

definitely picking up steam..

Category Four Hurricane:
Winds 131-155 mph (114-135 kt or 210-249 km/hr). Storm surge generally 13-18 ft above normal. More extensive curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failures on small residences. Shrubs, trees, and all signs are blown down. Complete destruction of mobile homes. Extensive damage to doors and windows. Low-lying escape routes may be cut by rising water 3-5 hours before arrival of the center of the hurricane. Major damage to lower floors of structures near the shore. Terrain lower than 10 ft above sea level may be flooded requiring massive evacuation of residential areas as far inland as 6 miles (10 km). Hurricane Luis of 1995 was a Category Four hurricane while moving over the Leeward Islands. Hurricanes Felix and Opal of 1995 also reached Category Four status at peak intensity.
