Hi CobaltBlue; Re Vietnam; "We were the good guys. We had zero to gain from that war, just as we had zero to gain from Korea. No oil, no gold, no power, no glory, no domination. Just doing the right thing, or trying to. Ach. You were just a kid, I guess. There are people on this thread who were there."

I agree that our motivations (at least at the public level) were only for the benefit of the world. But the fact is that privately, the administration understood that Vietnam was a losing war. They kept it going only so that they themselves, personally, could remain in power for as long as possible. To do this, they sold a bill of goods to the American people about the likelihood of a successful end to the war.

The result of their duplicity was 58,000 deaths for our side, and untold deaths and suffering for the other. Our motivations be damned. The war was a disaster for all concerned.

As far as the people who actually were in Vietnam, the US generals who are leaking war plans in order to stop a war in Iraq were officers there. The neocon warhawks (like Rumsfeld) who are advocating an easy war in Iraq were not.
