for centuries (going back to before the birth of Christ), the region collectively called "South Asia", was a bunch of many kingdoms. Sure they had wars, etc, but by and large they were able to live alongside each other in relative harmony. In fact, many of the wars were by 'outsiders from the region' invading.

Go figure. The concept of democracy did not exist then.
