There will continue to be damage done until the US public wakes up to what is happening

Lumber is an industrial commodity and the U.S. public is only dimly aware of its price. Home builders pass the cost on to consumers who are more focused on interest rates, land prices, and appliance options. Contrast this to the situation with Bush's recent steel tariffs, which made U.S. manufacturers howl when they had to compete against foreign manufactured goods made with cheaper foreign steel.

no more US goods and services coming north duty-free

That's a trade war that Canada would lose big-time.

an export tax on oil and gas going south, sufficient to cover your stupid little lumber duty game

Energy is just a commodity so the base price we pay for your oil would have to drop enough to cover the tax. But why don't you just slap a hefty export tax on the lumber to override the "government subsidies", which is what the U.S. wants? That way Canada would get to keep the money instead of giving it to the "evil" U.S. lumber companies. You should set that tax really high, till the U.S. begs you to lower it! Why is Canada just laying on the ropes and taking it in the shorts?
