The Harris item, is an example of the hypocrisy of the conservatives. It's one that I find more humorous than anything.....BUT. Chavez is another matter altogether. The Administration's behavior, at best, was repugnant and at odds with a treaty that the same Administration had signed. At worse, the Administration aided in the overthrow of a democratically elected President.

Continuing with this general theme of conservatives lying and hypocrisy...let us turn our attention to Iraq. This President Bush says he wants a strong Congressional resolution like the one Congress passed in 1998. Not surprising since the GOP lead the House and Senate in 1998.

Let's refresh our memories of the 1998, 105th Congress.
Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott
Senate Asst. Majority Leader, Don Nickles
House Majority Leader, Dick Armey
House Majority Whip, Tom DeLay
[For those that wish to gaze upon the faces of these fine leaders of the 105th Congressional majority: access.gpo.gov

That takes care of the names, but what of this strong Congressional Resolution that the President seeks [The curious mind might ask, If the 1998 resolution was so strong, why doesn't President Bush just use that one?]

On we go to the 1998 resolution:
Iraq Liberation Act of 1998 (Enrolled as Agreed to or Passed by Both House and Senate)[H.R.4655.ENR]
Full text: thomas.loc.gov

In the very last section of the Iraq Liberation Act of 1998

SEC. 8. RULE OF CONSTRUCTION.

Nothing in this Act shall be construed to authorize or otherwise speak to the use of United States Armed Forces (except as provided in section 4(a)(2)) in carrying out this Act .
---------------
So, the 105th Congress under the Republican majority leadership of Trent Lott, Don Nickles, Dick Armey, and Tom DeLay explicity prohibited the Administration from using US Armed Forces to effect a regime change in Iraq and President Bush wants a strong Congressional resolution like the one that the 105th Congress passed.

Rally around the President, give him what he asked for.

Note: For the conservatives that are far too freaking lazy to click on a link and read, section 4(a)(2) is as follows:

4(a)(2) MILITARY ASSISTANCE- (A) The President is authorized to direct the drawdown of defense articles from the stocks of the Department of Defense, defense services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training for such organizations.
