The teachings of the Buddha have been substantiated [updated, expanded upon, whatever] by many enlightened ones that followed interestingly enough. If you read even the cover of one of the Dahli Lamas books it's clear the guy has little axe to grind with anyone on the planet.

As for Jesus, the teachings become much more clear when studying OTHER religions interestingly enough... Christianity seems to have been a particularly hard hit victim of the 'telephone' game.
