Beijing, Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- China United Telecommunications Corp., the country's second-biggest mobile- phone company, had more than 3 million subscribers for its nationwide code division multiple access (CDMA) service as of Sept. 25, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

China United added new users at a daily average rate of 30,000 last month and signed up at most 60,000 users on one day, according to Xinhua's Web site, citing an unidentified company official. China United has a year-end user target of 7 million. Its Hong Kong-listed unit China Unicom Ltd. leases and runs the network in 12 wealthy provinces.

In Shanghai, Unicom charges as low as 0.2 yuan (2.4 cents) a minute for calls. In Beijing, users get free handsets if they sign up in groups of 50. They also get to call each other at half the standard rate, the paper said.

The promotions have prompted customers at rival China Mobile Communications Corp. to terminate contracts, the report said, without giving any numbers.
