IT Projects, whether custom developed or package implementation, ERP or others, have had a very poor record.. Failure rate is high (50%?) cost and budget over runs are too common.. Most end users where the systems are going to be implemented always have a problem with business process redesign to make things work etc. etc.. Management, when pushed into a corner of doing the right way or a quick way will always give in to 'get the damn thing in' since credibility of IT organization typically is not that high with users..

One reason I have always been suspicious of productivity gains numbers thrown around.. Too damn hard to judge..

FWIW.. This commentary is coming from some one who has spent a life time in Information Systems.. From IBM 360 (with 32k memory) all the way to package implementation..
