Microsoft has tried to support AMD. They put a gun to Intel's head on MMX licensing ("Give it to Cyrix and AMD or we don't add support to our software"). Their argument is the feature needs to be broadly available in H/W before they support it... real reason was to not let Intel get stronger. The problem now is a $3-5B hole that AMD is in. Even if you gave them cash, it's not clear the hole would stop growing. Microsoft will continue "lip service" to AMD, but at the end of the day, they will learn to survive and thrive with Intel. Intel cannot get too greedy because it is not that hard to make a "good enough" X86 CPU... Intel will not want to allow anyone to get to strong from below, and they appear to have capacity to serve a very big market. Also, a shortage of DRAM could have a much bigger impact on the cost of a system then the CPU… maybe OEMs and MS should think about investing more in memory capacity. re:"Beside Intel likes Linux too and they would like Linux to succeed. " Intel likes Linux for two reasons... It keeps MS on it's toes on the low end, and more importantly, it gave Intel a Unix alternative at the top end (something MS struggled with). Fact is, XP is much better than NT was, and it's getting better. Intel writes a bunch of code for Microsoft (and others), yes it is self-serving, but it also give users a more compelling reason to upgrade h/w and S/W. MS just needs to do a better job taking advantage of this and they continue to win. Nitt
