Sorry if you get tired, but please read a little more on this issue. I assure you that there are very serious sources ("The Economist" only one of them) stating that the US not only financially supported, but trained Bin Ladin in warfare.

This was perhaps a good idea at the time, training and supporting him and others like him fight the Soviets out of Afghanistan. It is an unfortunate twist of fate that Bin Ladin should turn against his former mentors after they no longer have the same enemy.
