You are right in what you say but i believe the only way to slove the mideast problems are to make our economy oil free. Hydrogen is the answer. It may be a lot more expensive than oil but it could be done. I would encourage mass development of solar and nuclear power to produce the hydrogen. There is reason to expect that research will find a way to separate water molecules in more efficient manner than we are currently capable of doing. What we must do as a nation is get started and the best way to do that is to tax imported oil by lets say about 20 bucks a barrel and use that revenue to subsidize the build up of the new infrastructure and fund research. Until our politicians face the music on this the dictators in the me will always be funded as will the terrorists.
