It's interesting how much we're pondering WW2 on this thread. WW2 is a special situation IMO. That was one war that we just couldn't avoid getting involved in. There was just too much at stake to sit that one out. There is a question about whether FDR enticed the Japanese to attack Pearl Harbor, so as to enrage the country into joining the war. I side with the conspiracy buffs on that one. I think FDR did know the attack on Pearl Harbor was coming. It could be argued that the wealthy elites wanted us to get involved in WW2, if for no other reason, than to get the depressed economy going again.

In any case WW2 was one war that the wealthy elites actually participated in, JFK on PT 109 and President Bush Sr. a fighter pilot, I'm sure there were many more.

I heard on C-SPAN recently that the last President to have a son or daughter in the military was President Eisenhower.

It seems that the wealthy elites are participating less and less in the military as time goes on and are leaving it up to the poor to fight their wars.
