John, I suppose that's pretty much it. Most authoritarian people specifically require the absence of thinking in their acolytes. I've seen plenty of that in the corporate, educational, military, national and other 'tribal' worlds.

Showing a willingness to refuse to think is excellent for giving orders to Mindless Zombie subordinates.

But when most people leave the office, they turn their brains on again [and in fact have them running during the day, but keep their mouth shut, head down, nose clean, nose to the grindstone, shoulder to the wheel, eye on the ball, ear to the ground, head out of the clouds, back to the wall and feet on the ground]. It's quite a trick to get them to leave their brains in permanent Zombie mode.

Then again, it's easy to not have to think. Makes life a breeze - leave the thinking for the boss and just go through the motions.
