I am thinking of buying a G* phone as a wedding present. They're not a linen-or-tableware sort of couple. He's an ardent kayaker who has been known to get into awkward spots. Here's some of a message I got back in August:

Just wanted to let you know that X is in Mexico till Oct. Right now
he's on the upper Rio Atengo with Y and Z. I got a message
relayed from Y's girlfriend yesterday, who heard from them by satellite
cell phone! I wish X would get one of those so I could rest more
peacefully but he doesn't like to spend money on anything that smacks of
"luxury".

The Basic Plan is $25/month and gives 5mins/month in the US or Carribean, but there are no free minutes from elsewhere. gmpcsus.com
Rates from Mexico are $3/min. on any US plan. It will be cheaper to get the Emergency Plan, $240/ year plus $2(US)-$3(Mex)/minute unless there's more than 30-60 minutes of calls from US. Sleep Plan would be cheapest for one-way emergency use, but no use for calls to the G* phone. Voicemail is $7.50 per month. I am told that is available in emergency mode. The accessories are still outrageously priced.

My friends would need voicemail for any two-way communication. The phone will be away from power for as long as weeks at a time. He could check for new mail daily - assuming few would have his number and they would have strict instructions only to call for urgent matters.

I have some concerns concerning continuing availability of service, and will he agree to spring for service? He's pretty hard on gear. Does anyone have any direct testimony as to the ruggedness of the Qualcomm GSP 1600?
