I actually saw a story about Nixon's secret contacts with the South Vietnamese in 1968 on the History Channel. It's mainstream information these days that Nixon thrawted Johnson's peace negotiations in 1968, so as to gain political advantage in the 1968 election. You can read all about it in Christopher Hitchen's book "The Trial of Henry Kissinger" in the first chapter "Curtain-Raiser: The Secret of '68".
