Only then will I go through past issues of The Economist and find the article for you.

Your decision. Most people on the thread, when challenged to prove a point which is in dispute, make the effort to do so. I certainly do. But I can't prove a negative, so I can't prove you didn't read something when you say you did.

I will say that I've paid attention to the situation in Afghanistan since the 1980's, and have read numerous reports about the connection between the CIA, the mujahideen, and bin Laden, and not one article in a reputable publication has stated that the CIA financially supported bin Laden. They universally report that bin Laden put millions of his own money into setting up his own private army of mujahideen.

Despite the fact that the US is very rich, the CIA is very cheap, even stingy, when it comes to passing out money.

Oh, and I never gamble with real money. Not even pennies. It's against my principles.

I used to bet on SI with the stakes being a case of beer or a bottle of your favorite tipple, value not to exceed $100, but quit because even though I always won, the other side never paid up. Hard to enforce a bet in cyberspace.
