The steel mills were a problem as were mines. Many people died in terrible working conditions and thus the need for unions popped up. Since then they have evolved into something a little less wholesome though which is why they get the rap they do. In some cases they serve to keep weak, ineffective workers employed. In others they use the group to hold up employers for higher wages that the experience and educational base of their members does not command on its own merits. One of the biggest problems I have is that they use the financial power of the group to affect our political landscape. That to me is no more savory than CEO's lining the pockets of our leaders for certain "favors" down the road. I'll give ya this though - they 100% for sure served a purpose back in the early 1900's. Had employers been more concerned with employee safety and less concerned with making MEGABUCKS this is an issue we may never have had to talk about
