Could be they are just making sure it gets made @ the right price point. Very interesting.

This is what they most likely are thinking, I'm sure they're not waiting for NOK or Ericy to do the right thing re cdma phones.

Could be WCDMA handsets for testing?

Not much discussion, but does this imply to anyone else QCOM may be entering the handset business w/ contract makers? I'm thinking another jump start the market move here with low end high volume handsets. Maybe India?

It seems like Flextronics might be entering the ODM business for both CDMA and GSM. If this is the case, Qualcomm is probably just helping Flex with the design of the CDMA handset. Flex could then sell the handset to operators who might put their own brand on the handset (like Vodafone wants to do)....I would think Reliance would be a pretty good candidate. They have a good brand name in India and are looking for low-end handsets.

Another possible reason for helping Flex with some designs could be for the 450MHz space.

I cant imagine Qualcomm reentering the handset business on their own.

Tony, QCOM activity in Reference Design

Q has entered into a couple of reference design contracts (at least one was with ZTE, I believe) to assist QCOM licensees with design of handsets.

It could be that on behalf of one or two of its contract parties, QCOM is working on design with FLEX. We know that QCOM expects its 6000 and 6050 chipsets to be built into sub$100 and sub$70 handsets (Thornley mentioned that a sub$70 handset would be on market by 2Q'03 at SSB Conference), and it may well be that QCOM is assisting on design of these entry-level handsets with FLEX even tho FLEX would ot get the mfg contract from e.g. ZTE.

Very doubtful that QCOM wd re-enter handset business. Essence of their strategy is NOT to compete with their customers but to encourage broadest possible new handset production esp. from "clone phone" makers who will source components from suppliers, including sourcing chipsets from QCOM.

Tony:

I happen to know for absolutely certain that Qualcomm does design phones. One effort on this part is from the ASICs division, they design refrence phones for all of their new chipsets, their max production on these would be like 1000 and they do not sell them. Another effort is that they have an advanced technology group that is operating out of their R&D division that designs phones for new markets and then helps the manufacturers set up their lines, for this I am sure that they sign a contract with the manufacturers for each design.

hope this helps
