Gunmen Attack Pakistan Girls' School

By ASIF SHAHZAD 10/04/2002 06:21:45 EST

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) - Gunmen sprayed bullets at a girls' Islamic school in eastern
Pakistan on Friday and two men on a motorcycle hurled grenades at a Christian
hospital in a remote corner of northwestern Pakistan.

A 12-year-old girl was hurt when bullets shattered the windows of the Jamia
Mohammadia Binat-ul Islam school. Nauree Sadiq, 12, was said to be in good
condition after being treated and released from a Lahore hospital.

Students screamed and ran for cover when the shooting began, witnesses said. No
one claimed responsibility for the attack.

In remote Bannu, near the western border with Afghanistan, two youths hurled a hand
grenade at a Christian missionary hospital. There were no injuries.

There was no indication the two attacks were linked.

The motive for the assault on the school - which teaches the Muslim holy book, the
Quran, to about 300 girls between the ages of 4 and 14 - was unclear.

The school is in one of Lahore's poorest neighborhoods, tucked away in a congested
street in the heart of the eastern Chungi Anar Sadhu neighborhood.
