Most funds don't have the choice to be out of the market. On an individual stock by stock basis, trying to avoid bottom picking is what they strive for. However, the cash must be invested.

Also, if an analyst doesn't know the dangers of trying to catch a falling knife by now, they are not very bright. There are blowups everyday.

The thing an analyst who has not seen a bear market and who is currently experiencing one is only missing the experience of coming out of a bear market. That, though, is the easy part. Otherwise a 30-something analyst just wonders if it will ever end.
