changing the idea from acting in your own self interest ...to principles that generally support your self interest.

I don't see the difference. I always thought it was about principles.

For that matter if you add the word "enlightened" it seems to me that you are adding other moral ideas to the mix besides pure self interest.

I don't think enlightenment is about acting morally but about acting smart. Enlightened self interest is about recognizing what is really, really in one's self interest and having the discipline to pursue it. Is it in your best interest to eat cheesecake until you're a whale? Short term, it is. Feels good. Long term, you lose mobility and then you die. So enlightened is about recognizing and acting on that understanding. It's not doing what's moral, it's doing what's smart.

in this one case it is really easy and safe and they need the money bad

If your subjects need the money bad enough, most would probably take it. I think a better test of ethics would be if you needed the money, but not desperately.

it certainly would not be in his self interest if everyone acted like that.

So people acting in their enlightened self interest model the sort of behavior they want to encourage in society, lest they give aid and comfort to the enemy.
